OnePlus Nord: An ideal premium midrange smartphone from OnePlus?

After a lot of hypes, teasers, and rumors, OnePlus Nord finally saw its limelight on July 22 in India and Europe. OnePlus Nord is the brand's second midrange offering after the infamous OnePlus X, which was launched in 2016. Interestingly, OnePlus Nord also secures the spot as the most affordable 5G smartphone available in India as of now. Let's dive into OnePlus Nord's specs and features in detail.

Let's start with the naming of this device. OnePlus Nord, the naming seems to be unusual and interesting, right? OnePlus Nord is the brand's first smartphone to have a non-alphabetic or numeric naming pattern. According to OnePlus, Nord represents True North in many European languages, and this aligns with OnePlus's intention of venturing into a new segment.

OnePlus Nord comes with a 6.44" FHD+ AMOLED display with a 90 Hz refresh rate and 180 Hz touch sampling for a buttery smooth touch experience. The display is protected with Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 and has an optical in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the device along with support for face unlock. The smartphone is made up of glass sandwich design, but oddly OnePlus has gone with a plastic frame that slightly affects the premium feel of the device. In OnePlus Nord, the brand has gone with a conventional gloss back finish instead of a frosted glass pattern, as seen in the OnePlus 8 series. OnePlus's nifty alert slider makes a return in OnePlus Nord but misses out on official IP rating and headphone jack.

Internally, OnePlus Nord is powered by Snapdragon 765G processor. Snapdragon 765G is the premium upper mid-range processor from Qualcomm and comes with integrated 5G support. The inclusion of 5G makes the device future proof, but it's nearly impossible to see 5G in India at least for a year or two. Snapdragon 765G is a capable chipset from Qualcomm, and it lies somewhere in between Qualcomm's yesteryear flagship Snapdragon 845 and 855 processors in terms of raw performance. The graphics performance in OnePlus Nord is taken care of by the Adreno 620 GPU, and it can run all the latest AAA titles without any noticeable lag or hiccups.

OnePlus Nord is equipped with a quad-camera setup with the primary camera being OnePlus's favorite 48 MP Sony 586 sensor, with f/1.75 aperture, as seen in the OnePlus 7 Series, and vanilla OnePlus 8 smartphones. OnePlus Nord also comes with support for Optical and Electronic image stabilizations, and the primary camera can shoot videos at 4K 30 FPS. The second camera is an 8 MP ultra-wide lens with f/2.25 aperture and 119 degrees FOV. The final two cameras are 5 MP depth sensor and 2 MP macro lens. OnePlus Nord has a dual-facing camera situated inside a pill-shaped cutout on the top left corner, making it the first OnePlus device to sport dual selfie cameras. The pill-shaped cut out holds a 32 MP sensor along with an 8 MP ultra-wide lens to fit in more peoples in your group selfies.

OnePlus Nord is fueled by a 4115 mAh battery along with support for Wrap Charge 30T. OnePlus introduced a new color scheme for the Nord series, and I personally expected OnePlus to bundle a Teal or Cyan color charging cable with Nord. But OnePlus has struck with their red color charging cable for the Nord series too.

OnePlus Nord runs on Oxygen OS based on Android 10. Oxygen OS is one of the most loved and popular UI available in the smartphone market due to its minimalistic look and bloat-free interface. OnePlus Nord will get at least two major OS updates along with three years of security updates like all other flagship OnePlus devices.

OnePlus Nord is available in 6GB+64GB, 8GB+128GB and 12GB+256GB configurations. OnePlus Nord is equipped with DDR4X RAM with UFS 2.1 storage, and like previous OnePlus devices, Nord also misses out on storage expansion via MicroSD card. The smartphone is priced at Rs.24,999 (available in September), Rs.27,999, and Rs.29,999, and it is available in Blue Marble and Gray Onyx color options. The 8GB and 12GB variants are currently up for pre-order and will go on sales starting August 4.
